Reach a Higher Ground with Nuendo 3

Nuendo has become Steinberg's powerhouse software for post-production and other high-end professional audio applications. On anything that deals with locking sound to picture (film, TV, games, etc.), it pretty much rules. This (above) is the gratuitous "don't you wish your main window looks like this?" screenshot.

Whoa... are those four studio busses? Can I create individual sub-mixes for up to four separate studios? Does every audio, group or effect channel in the Nuendo Mixer offers new studio sends with dedicated volume and panorama controls as well as a Pre Fader/Post Fader switch? Why, yes, yes, and yes!

Okay, this is seriously cool. Go swimming in the Nuendo Pool, which lets you manage all the audio, video and MIDI data files used in a project in lists. You can import and export, display metadata, search, sort, organize and archive content. You can even batch process many files simultaneously. We told you it was cool, right?

Here is Nuendo's MixConvert, a new plug-in for converting one Surround format into another. Who ever needs to do that? Pretty much everyone. Get with the program, will ya?

Hey, nice box.

From time to time, you may ask yourself, "Hey Self? Why do we have all of these DAW applications that seem to do very similar things?"

First, stop talking to yourself, at least out loud. Second, be aware that the key word in that question is "seem". While every Digital Audio Workstation (i.e., music/audio recording/production) software package can provide multitrack recording, nonlinear editing, and a host of creative tools, each one has an area of strength that, for certain applications, places it heads above the others. Steinberg's Nuendo 3 has defined this path for itself, making changes both subtle and broad to become what is perhaps the most powerful DAW software for post-production, multimedia and other sound-for-picture applications.

Just The Facts, M'am

I've Got The News
Let's imagine you haven't taken a look at Nuendo in awhile, and you're not aware of the advances made since version 3 came out. While they're too numerous to list (yes, even on the web), here are some highlights:

• Inputs for External Sources
• Individual sub-mixes for up to four separate studios
• Talkback Function
• Extended Support for Hardware Controllers, including Euphonix's EuCon protocol
• Enhanced Sample Rate Conversion
• New Global Presets let you determine how Nuendo handles imported video files
• Audio Pull Up/Down
• HDTV Frame Rates
• Extended Network Functions
• Protection Against Data Loss
• MacOS X Performance Optimization

Is Nuendo For Me?
Chances are, the answer is yes. If you're in the sound-for-picture biz (be it in film, TV, or video games), Nuendo is an awesome choice. Designed for both speed and reliability, Nuendo has tons of built-in support for cross-platform compatibility, integrated video, and surround tools.

For live recording, Nuendo is a superb choice. It allows for super-long recording beyond the 2GB standard, using its WAV64 format. Hit record and get the whole concert without worrying about multiple files, or the "crossing midnight" curse which plagues other DAWs. And, of course, for studio recording and mixing, Nuendo has the flexibility and compatibility you need for today's studio.
