NEVE GENESYS ANALOGUE RECORDING CONSOLE

ocean way drumsSo, here we are in a digital world. Oooh, look at all the 1's and 0's floating around! And everything is chrome plated. Neat. Where's my flying car and robot maid?

Now that we're here in the future, you may feel some compelling urge to let go of everything in your past. Hold the horses for a moment; some of the aspects of classic recording were actually pretty darn good. Take, for example, the classic sound of a Neve console. Think about all the great music that was tracked through a Neve board. It's mind boggling. So, in this age of the digital workstation, is it a necessary evil that we have to abandon our favorite consoles of yore?

The answer, thankfully, is a resounding "No!". The folks at Neve haven't been hiding in a cave somewhere. They know how people are working these days, and know that connecting with 2" analog tape machines is about as popular as lighting gas lamps. Having long ago set the standard in analog (or "analogue" for you Anglophiles) console design, Neve has taken the right step into the future with the introduction of the Genesys console.

In the Beginning...

Genesys wasn't born overnight. Neve's designers and engineers worked hard to build a console that accomplished two goals. First, it needed to integrate with today's digital recording environment. Second, it needed to be made at a price that more studios (often smaller, privately-held rooms) could afford. They certainly hit both nails on the head. Genesys is a hand-built, expandable analogue recording console with digital workstation control and a base configuration starting at about $50,000. It's a far way off from the days of the multi-million dollar consoles that were seen on those covers of Mix Magazine for all those years.

Genesys represents a new beginning for Neve - a console that builds upon Neve’s 40 years of technical heritage, including legendary mic preamplifiers and highly revered analogue circuit design. But Genesys also accommodates the seismic changes in the methods of music recording, with extensive digital control and connectivity. And hey, let's admit it: who doesn't want a Neve board in their room? Pretty much no one. Enough said.

Under the hood

In its basic configuration, Genesys offers 16 channels of mic/line preamps, 16-channel DAW monitoring, hands-on DAW control for Pro Tools, Logic, Nuendo and more, 8 auxiliary buses, 8 group buses, 2 main outputs, 4 effects returns, comprehensive metering, 5.1 monitoring, 2 cue mixes, talkback services and an internal power supply. As studio owners’ needs require, Genesys can be expanded to 64 channels in a straight or articulated frame, with options including motorized fader automation, recall, mastering-grade 192kHz A/D and D/A converters, digitally controlled EQ and dynamics, remote mic amp control and much more.

One advantage the Genesys maintains is an excellent studio control surface with comprehensive monitoring and signal routing capabilities. As Neve explains it, this "eliminates the typical mixture of awkwardly interfaced devices, and puts a proper console back in the heart of the studio." Works for us.
